Stringing Basics

Stringing Basics

It is recommended that if you play three or more times per week, you should restring your racket at least three times a year. This will ensure optimum performance, as strings lose their elasticity with frequent use.

Tension

Every racket comes with a recommended string tension.

A common misunderstanding is that a higher string tension gives greater power, but in fact the reverse is true. A higher or tighter string tension provides less power but more control. This is because the string works like a trampoline. When the ball hits a racket strung at a lower tension, the string gives more and therefore transfers more energy and power back to the ball.

It is best to opt for a mid-range tension (24 to 27lbs), unless you have a specific need for greater control or power.

Gauge

Thin strings generally offer better control and feel, although they tend to be less durable. Thicker strings are less responsive, but they last longer!
